What's Your Skin Type?

Understanding your skin type is key in determining how to take care of your skin.  In order to establish a healthy skin care routine, it is important to know the different skin types and where you fit into the following categories:

  1. Normal:  small pore size, clear skin, good amount of water vs. oil in skin, healthy and well-balanced, typically not problematic
  2. Dry:  small pore size, lack of oil, tight and flaky, can appear red, rough, and itchy
  3. Oily:  enlarged pores, prone to acne and congestion, excessive oil production, thicker skin, oily and shiny texture
  4. Combination:  areas that can be both oily and dry, pore size varies, oily “T” zone (forehead, nose, chin), dry on cheeks, can experience breakouts and appears congested
  5. Sensitive:  easily irritated, can be dry/oily/combination, can be linked to rosacea, excema and dehydration, redness on cheeks, nose or chin

Here are some strategies that can help you to narrow down which skin type best describes yours:

The Naked Face:

Examine your skin after gentling cleansing and then pat dry your face with a towel. Refrain from using any skincare products or make up for about 30 minutes. In front of a well- lit mirror, observe your skin for signs of: pore size, redness, shine, dryness, and texture. Make note of the characteristics that best describe your skin.  Repeat this process in the evening before bed. For best results, repeat this for 2 to 3 days to ensure you accurately determine your skin type.

Blotting Sheet Method:

Gently cleanse and pat dry your face with a towel.  Refrain from using any skincare products or make up for about 30 minutes. In front of a well- lit mirror, use either a clean blotting sheet or a dry tissue to dab along the “T” zone (forehead, nose, chin).  Be mindful and take note of which areas appear to be oily as you blot them. Repeat this process in the evening before bed. For best results, repeat this for 2 to 3 days to ensure you accurately determine your skin type.

Visit your Aestheticican:

Maintaining regular visits with a trained aesthetician can help you to ensure you have identified your skin type.  Your aesthetician can recommend an effective skin care regimen and can also provide treatments to enhance your skin’s health.

Skin Care Products:

When purchasing skin care products and make up, check that the ingredients are appropriate for your particular skin type. This can help you to maintain healthy, well-balanced skin.
